Three lessons here. All involve primary sources on reconciliation with Britain and the Treaty of Paris. The first activity is a jigsaw activity where students are assigned the perspective of England or the US, either wanting to break up or reconcile. The second and third activities involve primary sources and a worksheet.
Activity 1: Divide the class into four groups, and give each group a separate set of documents. One group of Americans will want to reconcile with England; another group will want independence. One group of Britons will want to reconcile with American; the other group will want to suppress the revolution. Each group then answers questions and presents to the class based on their assigned perspective.
Activity 2: Students read two primary source peace feelers from Britain and answer questions.
Activity 3: Students read the Treaty of Paris and complete a worksheet.

Grade Level: HS, (College)
- This lesson is intended for high school (HS) students.
- However, we think it would be excellent for college students as well.
Remote Ready: With Modifications
- Links to the reading assignments can easily be emailed or posted for students.
- It’s much easier for small groups or pairs to coordinate a phone call or video conference meeting than for the entire class to sync their schedules. Have these small groups post answers, a synopsis, or a video of their discussion to your LMS.
- Paraphrase questions into your LMS so you can grade student’s written answers online rather than in an email or on a worksheet. Or if a graphic organizer is amazingly well done, you could have your students take a picture of their completed work and email it to you.
