This second lesson has 3 activities. The first concerns the American alliance with France. The second activity is on African Americans in the American Revolution. And the third activity involves an interactive map activity, much like the third activity in the last lesson. This lesson focuses on battles in the South (the last map activity focused on battles in the North).

  1. Activity 1: Two students in each group of four will receive primary source instructions American diplomats were given when sent to France to form an alliance. The other two students will read the actual treaties between the US and France. Everyone will complete a worksheet during their respective task and then share what they learned with the group.

  2. Activity 2: Five primary sources concerning African Americans in the South during the Revolution are presented. You may want each student to read one or all of these and answer questions.

  3. Activity 3: Much like in the first lesson, students use the interactive map and pick what they believe to be the 3 most important battles of the war in the South. They can discuss their answers with a partner and/or the class.

Grade Level:  HS, (College)

  • This lesson is intended for high school (HS) students.
  • However, we think it would be excellent for college students as well.

Remote Ready:  With Modifications

  • Links to the reading assignments can easily be emailed or posted for students.
  • It’s much easier for small groups or pairs to coordinate a phone call or video conference meeting than for the entire class to sync their schedules.  Have these small groups post answers, a synopsis, or a video of their discussion to your LMS.
  • Paraphrase questions into your LMS so you can grade student’s written answers online rather than in an email or on a worksheet.  Or if a graphic organizer is amazingly well done, you could have your students take a picture of their completed work and email it to you.
