Lesson 3:
The Battle Over Reconstruction:
The Aftermath of Reconstruction

Check out these two role playing group activities, complete with primary sources and an interactive map. The activities analyze the effects of Reconstruction.

  1. Activity 1: Role Play. Each group gets a different primary source and answers questions. Next, they check out the later section of the interactive map mentioned in Lesson 1 and answer questions. The groups then role play committee members reporting to Congress on Reconstruction as a form of class discussion.

  2. Activity 2: Students will role play research assistants examining the results of the 14th Ameendment. Students will examine the 14th Amendment text itself and individual primary sources in groups. Finally, they will present their findings to the class, and the group will condense all group's findings into a summary.
