Lincoln's First and Second Inaugural Addresses


Students first read Lincoln's second inaugural address using a graphic organizer that calls for a close reading. They then move backwards to do a close reading of Lincoln's first address (abridged to 6 pages) in groups. Students complete a second organizer that calls for comparing the two speeches with a partner (graphic organizer is 9 pages, including the text of both speeches).

Grade Level:  MS, HS, (College)

  • MS=Middle School
  • HS=High School
  • Though MS and HS are the specified grade level, this lesson would be excellent for college students as well.

Remote Ready:  With Modifications

  • Links to the reading assignments can easily be emailed or posted for students
  • Group work (pairs) might be difficult, though questions could be answered individually or discussion can be had via typing on your LMS or over video conferencing
  • Consider paraphrasing questions into you LMS for easy grading of written questions have students take a picture of their graphic organizers and email them to you.
