Lincoln's Inaugural vs. South Carolina's Secession Doc

Fave! Three Activities. are available here. In the first, half the class reads Lincoln's first inaugural address and the second reads South Carolina's secession document. In the second activity, students explain their doc to 2 new teammates who did not read their doc. The final activity calls for a panel discussion.

  1. Activity 1: Students read either South Carolina's secession doc OR Lincoln's First Inaugural Address. These are 7 and 10 pages respectively. One link is broken, but don't worry; both docs can be found at the end of the packet. Students read the docs in groups. Each group member is assigned a part of the doc. Groups answer 4 provided questions.

  2. Activity 2: Students are grouped into teams of 4 with half of the members having read the Lincoln doc and the other half having read the South Carolina doc. Students explain their docs to their teammates, who fill out a chart. Students then answer questions.

  3. Activity 3: The teacher organizes a panel discussion, selecting 4 students to debate the first question. Afterwards, the teacher selects new panelists for each of the 2 remaining questions. After each panel discussion, each audience member turns to another audience member to discuss who made the most convincing argument.

  • HS=High School
  • Though HS is the specified grade level, this lesson would be excellent for college students as well.

Remote Ready:  With Modifications

  • Links to the reading assignments can easily be emailed or posted for students
  • Group work (pairs) might be difficult, though questions could be answered individually
  • Paraphrase questions into your LMS so you can grade student’s written answers more easily
  • Discussion can be had via typing on your LMS or over video conferencing
