Civil Rights, Andrew Johnson, and the Radical Republicans

3 Activities. Students gauge how they would have ordered Reconstruction's priorities. They read The Civil Rights Act of 1866 and Andrew Johnson's veto of it. And they answer questions and discuss.

  1. Activity 1: How Should Reconstruction Be Handled? In pairs or groups, students examine a list of potential actions for Congress to take after the Civil War. Groups discuss what to prioritize then share with the class.

  2. Activity 2: The Civil Rights Act of 1866: Students read the Civil Rights Act of 1866 (roughly 3 large-print, large-margin pages, without the intro). Students answer questions and then discuss.

  3. Activity 3: Veto of the Civil Rights Billl, Andrew Johnson: Students read Johnson's veto (roughly 15 large-print, large margin pages), answer questions, and discuss. Teachers can elect to have students write a response to an overarching question based on the earlier documents.
